Square pianos were popular in the home in the late 18th and early 19th centuries . They were made with similar design principles to a modern grand piano, but with a simpler action. They are less robust than modern pianos due to their age and the materials with which they were made.
A huge number of square pianos were made during this period, and many still exist today. Often beautifully made and decorated, with a distinctive clear and sweet tone, square pianos require care and specialist knowledge to repair or restore.
During my time as a student at Newark I spent some time learning to repair and restore square pianos. I am able to perform minor repairs and restoration work on square pianos; I can also give advice/appraisal of the condition of a square piano and work likely to be needed, and put you in touch with a suitable restorer should extensive work be required.
If you have a square piano which you would like to have examined, please contact me.
